"Substantially different from my other Pulltap!" 2009-10-01
By Patrick M. Jordan
I have two corkscrews before me, and although the style is the same, both differ greatly, especially in quality. One is a true Pulltap brand corkscrew previously purchased from another vendor, and the other is this supposedly "Pulltap" corkscrew. Unless they've changed almost every aspect of the manufacturing process, this is not a genuine Pulltap.

The genuine Pulltap screw has the logo stamped into the metal, which is bent squarely and solidly and with fair precision. On the recently purchsed one, there is no logo, and the sheet metal is lazily and ungracefully rounded. The genuine screw has more carefully finished bearing pins; the newer one has soft steel pins slammed in and the joints are stiff in some places and loose in others. The genuine features a main bearing with an even, flat contact surface -- one the newer one has the outer parts merely pressed inward. The newer corkscrew wobbles annoyingly.

At first glance it's a fairly good copy, and even with its imprecision it's a far better screw than most. Even with all my concerns, it's by no means a disappointment, because the design makes up for the manufacturing foibles to some degree. But if you want the genuine article, you should absolutely have it.

 "I give it an A" 2009-09-08
By Shana A. Hausler (Texas)
It is a very sturdy tool. Something I was looking for in a better quality wine key was the shape of the tip of the screw. This key has what I was looking for. It is a better quality tool than I had previously (that tool was NOT this brand - was from Olive Garden). The tefflon (spell check that) coating is very good. The blade on this key is of good quality, and really cuts into the foil more effectively than my previous tool. I am discovering that with this tool, my table-side wine presentations are going much smoother because of the sharper blade. I am getting the foils off much quicker, therefore not looking like a dork. haha.

I recommend this product if you have to do table-side wine presentations!

"Yes, it works very well" 2009-06-08
By B.McG (Mesa, AZ)
I got this corkscrew for my wife as she opens a bottle of wine now and again. She has been having problems lately with the corks falling apart when she uses our tried and true gull wing cork screw. In her words "My new cork screw is the BEST! The screw went into the cork like butter, and the double pulley outtey thingey worked so smoothly and easily. Love it!" The only negative is that it came without instructions, which we found on-line. And do shop around for the best price.

 "Almost 5 Stars" 2009-02-06
By A. Averso (St. Louis)
Everything about this corkscrew is awesome except one thing, but if you're careful it is okay too:

When snapping the screw part back into the body of the corkscrew, the sharp tip has nicked my finger several times. I have learned how to avoid it, but it can draw blood!

Otherwise, I love the double-hinged action and have not found a cork that this corkscrew can't handle!

It is a tough, rugged tool that has a good finish and appearance in the bar.

 "Not what I expected" 2008-11-29

The corkscrew is sturdy enough but the hinges are very stiff, making it less easy to use, unlike the ones I'm used to seeing in restaurants and wine stores.

 "Never had better" 2009-09-24
By SumBumbleBee (California, United States)
I've gone through a lot of wine keys in my day, and this one tops the list. I do a lot of tasting parties, so I really appreciate ease, speed, and comfort of opeining. This key handles all three beautifully.

"Not as good as the original....." 2009-09-17
By William Rosich
....but a solid corkscrew. Love the deeply-hinged boot. Makes extracting longer corks a snap. The hinge action and overall construction is superior in every way to the ubiquitous Pulltap corkscrew.

My big problem with it is the bulk. It has a very wide handle. Not a problem if you keep it in a drawer in the kitchen, but too big to comfortably carry in a pocket; as I need to as I'm a bartender at a wine bar. If you want something with the same design but in a slimmer form, seek out the original Coutale. I found the original Coutale corkscrew for $15 at a certain winery in Paso Robles co-owned by a certain famous family from France's Rhone Valley. (If that ain't a hint, chances are you aren't much of a wine snob.) That's what I carry at work now.

I open dozens of bottles a night at work and I'm very particular about the harware I use. I've tried everything from cheap distributor give-aways to Pulltaps to Coutale/Screwpull to Chateau Laguiole (the carbon fiber Eric Beaumard edition is quite nice) and this Screwpull/Coutale design is by far the easiest to use.

This corkscrew works well with my arthritic hands. And it does what it is supposed to do--open wine bottles.

"much better than the $5 options" 2009-08-19
By D. Duong (Los Angeles, CA)
for just a little bit more money than generic corkscrew, you can have a screwpull. i was tired of having my $5 corkscrews break apart on me so i opted to spend a little more and boy am i glad i did. it's very solid feeling and looks to be built to last and the 2-step key makes for easy work of any length cork. highly recommended
