"How to use the Metrokane Rabbit" 2008-03-02
By Stephen D. Ferris (Oldwick, NJ)
From a design standpoint, this is a very good product. But the documentation is pathetic, and was clearly never tested with new / real users. There is no explanation of how it's supposed to work. That understanding is very helpful: with it, you'll never have trouble, and will marvel at the clever design. Let's get started.

Have a bottle of wine handy on which you've already used the supplied (and very good) little foil cutter to remove the foil over the cork.

Take the unit in your hand and look at the movable parts. The overhead lever that swings outward / downward and then is reversed / brought back over the top - moves the spiral corkscrew up and down. To see this, operate the overhead lever with one hand while holding the clamping "side handles" with the other. When you move the overhead handle the corkscrew rotates.

Why is the corkscrew turning? Because it's forced to do that as it goes through a "guide" (the metal collar with gray plastic center). The gray plastic piece has an internal spiral track that forces the corkscrew to rotate as it passes through.

Here's the critical point: as long as the guide mechanism is locked in place and can't move up or down, the guide forces the corkscrew to rotate when going through.

What if this guide were locked in place on the `down-stroke,' but could move vertically on the `up-stroke'? Then the guide would force the corkscrew to rotate on the way down (so the corkscrew would penetrate the cork), but the guide would stay attached to (and _not_ rotate) the corkscrew on the way up - thus pulling the cork.

When the unit is operated correctly this is exactly what happens. But how?

Look more closely: Before using the Rabbit's `side-handles' to hold the wine bottle neck, the guide is locked in place by two protruding spring-loaded latches and can't move vertically. Try it: it won't budge. (You can actually see these small latches projecting over the top of the guide and keeping it from moving - by looking in the area above and to the far rear of the guide, near the smooth rod.)

On the other hand, when the clamping handles are squeezed onto the neck of a bottle, these latches above the guide _retract_, releasing their hold on the guide so it can move upward.

Do this now: Take your bottle of wine and, with the overhead lever rotated to its fully outward / downward position, place the guide directly over the cork and grip the neck of the bottle _firmly_ with the clamping side handles.

Look at the latches described above: they have retracted, and no longer restrain the guide from moving upward. This has no effect during the down-stroke / cork penetration phase, since the guide is already as low as it can go. Because the guide can't move, it forces the corkscrew to rotate when you operate the overhead lever - thus penetrating the cork. Perform this down-stroke.

Now watch what happens when the overhead lever is pulled back to withdraw the cork (while you at the same time continue to grip the bottle neck firmly with the side levers). Because the guide can now move vertically with the corkscrew, it imposes no rotation on the corkscrew. The corkscrew stays inside the cork as the overhead lever is moved outward / downward, and the cork is extracted. Do it. You now have the cork out of the bottle, suspended above the bottle neck, and are still gripping the side handles around the bottle neck.

Release your hold on the side handles and move the Rabbit away from the bottle. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew. Re-grip the side handles with one hand and once again operate the overhead lever, bringing it all the way back to its fully closed position again (as if you were on the original down-stroke into the cork).

As you get to the very end of the stroke, you will feel resistance and will hear a click: the latches have snapped back into place over the top of the guide, locking it in place. The guide is once again `captured' - and cannot move vertically. The cork is still attached to the corkscrew.

Finally, move the overhead lever back yet again to its fully open position (as if pulling the cork from the bottle). This time the latches _don't_ retract (because you're not using the side handles to grip the bottle neck) - so the latches again keep the guide from moving, and this forces the corkscrew to rotate `in reverse' as it passes upward through the guide. The corkscrew backs out of the cork and the cork drops off. It takes all of a few seconds once you get the hang of it.

Understanding the operating principles should help. None of this is well explained (or, indeed, explained at all) in the almost non-existent documentation.

 "Excellent product" 2008-02-15
By A. Mayo (Seattle, WA USA)
We'll, this is made of entirely die cast metals. With all other 'Rabbits', there are some components made of rubber and plastic...with this one no. And it is solid metal coated with Titanium (not "spray painted") and will not corrode as other metals will. I must admit that $200 is steep but I purchased mine as a Gold Box special for $99 and I absolutely love it! Also, this carries a ten year warranty which is 10 timess the standard warranty.

I have a metrokane rabbit. Pretty - Yes, worked well - Yes for about a year. Then the mechanism came apart. Metrokane WILL NOT stand behind their product for more than 12 months. Which I find amazing considering that a knock-off of the rabbit can be purchased for about $30. Buy a knock-off they work as just as well. Don't believe that the additional cost of the rabbit gives you a superior product.

 "Beautiful and solid" 2007-12-28
By Amos D. Meyers (San Diego, CA USA)
I think it may be more beautiful than the picture! It's definitely even shinier than shown. The gold tone is a little darker than real gold, but very striking.

This thing is HEAVY! My kitchen scale says it weighs 2 pounds, 5 ounces. I personally love that, since it's such solid construction. Everything is metal, including the "gears," which was important to me.

In case anyone is confused like I was, it's die-cast metal, plated in gold-colored titanium. I don't think there's any gold in it, nor is it solid titanium. Probably obvious, but... Also, it does have the nice bristly rubber pads on the handle like the other Rabbits, which makes it very comfortable. The black-and-clear clamshell box that it comes in is basically the same as for others.

Functionally, the action is very smooth. I just opened a bottle and it moved cleanly.

If asked for a "con," I was disappointed to notice that the foil cutter has only two cutting wheels, unlike the four in my original Rabbit. But it didn't make a different on the bottle I just opened.

I can't wait to invite people over and wow them.

"Rabbit Corkscrew in a special box" 2009-03-24
By medusa452003@yahoo.com (il)
I found this great Rabbit Corkscrew all in one box(it actually opens on a side hinge ) for my oldest daughter for when she turned 21. We had an "imitation rabbit" given to us 2 years old,and without a great deal of use it fell apart. I had originally purchased the first rabbit from a specialty shop. Realizing my next daughter would soon be 21 I wanted to buy the same. I was dissapointed to find it had only been a special order available over Christmas.

Luckily,I found this one on Amazon. It's even a little better in that the silver plate on the front has a space to engrave a name. I don't really encourage my children to drink by giving them liquor as gifts, but I thought this would be a nice memory for their future dinners. The price ,I think, is a good bargin. Our friends paid more at Sharper Image and it fell apart too. Additionally the box allows you to keep all the extra pieces in one place, not in a kitchen drawer,LOST!

"Not happy - false advertising as the "ears" and "pull" are plastic" 2009-05-15
By NYCer (New York City, NY)
I think the product description is misleading. I was looking for an all-metal rabbit - only the core of this tool is polished chrome...the rest of it is plastic. Misleading - the description should be changed to be more precise...only a part of this rabbit is "die-cast". For a "sterling" model I am disappointed. To top this off, the foil cutter outfit is also plastic! (ex the blades of course). I am appalled.

Very nice presentation box for this sturdy corkscrew. Works every nicely on both real cork and the new synthetic "corks". The foil cutter matches the polished chrome finish beautifully and works very nicely on both lead, aluminum and plastic cork capsule. Very well constructed, feel like it should be my last corkscrew purchase (at lease for myself).

If all wine corks were alike, the Metrokane would be perfect. However, many corks are very snug and require a bit more elbow grease when using the Metrokane's lever. These corks cause the small, frail plastic cap that secures the screw to pop off and shoot across the room. After retrieving the cap and re-attaching it ~12 times, I threw the Metrokane into the garbage can. Try the Vertical Rabbit instead.

The corkscrew is flimsy. It is poor for opening synthetic or plastic closures. Because the handles separate when lying on it's side it is difficult to store in a drawer and I have to use a rubber band to hold the handles together when not in use. The product is barely adequate and 2 stars is really too high a rating. The foil cutter that came with it is worse and I never use it. That wouldn't even deserve a rating at all. You are probably better off buying a more expensive corkscrew that is sturdier and easier to work with.

I am a very can-do person, but before my Houdini I had gotten into my share of wrestling matches with wine bottles. I had even broken a spiral or two before I figured there had to be a better way.

The Houdini is slick. Getting the corkscrew to go in is no problem. So far as pulling the cork out is concerned, it does requires a certain amount of "give" in the handle to withdraw it successfully. With just a little patience and practice you will get the hang of it and you should be in business in short order.

This item often becomes a conversation piece for guests that are still pulling out corks the old-fashioned way.

In my opinion, the display ad for this item was for a "Rabbit" cork remover. We have all read such good reviews of the Rabbit, and how it lasts forever. I believed that we were buying a plain model of Rabbit, it isn't, it appears to be an inexpensive copy, plastic components, and no better than the no name knock-offs. I emailed Metrokane, the Vendor, asking about the difference from the real Rabbit, received no reply. I'm sure that this model will be in the trash in a few months, just like it's predecessors. I recommend that you make sue you are getting a real Rabbit before you order.

"buy the newer Metrokane VERTICAL Rabbit INSTEAD" 2009-09-13
By David Jeske (San Francisco, CA United States)
This corkscrew was a nice first design. However, it's really huge, and it isn't flawless. The same company has developed a new version called the Metrokane VERTICAL Rabbit. That opener is nearly flawless. It's much smaller, and it is even easier to use. You can read my review on the vertical rabbit. It's truly great. Plus, the vertical rabbit comes in a few different color choices. Don't bother with the normal rabbit anymore IMO.

"works great until it doesn't" 2009-07-04
By John Courtade (Austin, Texas United States)
This is a wonderful product initially. It's easy to use and the cork just slides out effortlessly. However, the screw that it uses soon wears out. This can happen in as little as 3 to 6 months or so depending on how much wine you drink. I assume that the teflon coating wears off or the tip dulls. In any event, it then becomes increasingly difficult to use until it starts pushing the cork in the bottle. They throw in one extra screw, but additional ones are outrageously priced--$10 on Amazon. Nice margin for the manufacturer. There were at one time Chinese knock-offs in the marketplace that had the same characteristics, but at least they were cheap, $10 or 15 if I remember correctly. This product costs a lot of money for its short lifespan.

"Makes wine opening SO EASY!" 2009-06-09
By K. Huang
Wow! I've hated wine bottle openers for as long as I can remember - first, it seems like they always need lots of arm strength for the tugging of the cork, and second, the cork sometimes shreds and bits of cork fall into the wine - gross. The Rabbit makes the whole experience almost..enjoyable! Clamp, twist, pop, there goes the cork! Love it! Don't need excessive arm muscle either ;)

 "Very easy to use" 2009-06-08
By B. Johnson (Hermosa Beach, CA USA)
We had a similar product from a large wholesaler that lasted for several years but finally broke. We replaced it with this and are very pleased. It's really simple to use and opens bottles easily. The grip is easy on your hands too.

Recommended.

 "Worst P of S ever" 2009-06-06
By M. Balzano
I want to give this piece of crap 0 stars, but really it deserves a negative number. I bought this after many many failed wine openers, and i thought this was the one. I opened 3-5 bottles successfully - and then the nightmare began. i cant get a bottle open now without 20-40+ tries. sometimes it is taking so long i have to leave it alone for a bit and then come back and try again. it has nothing to do with the coated corkscrew. it is just a piece of crap. i have been meaning to send it back under its 10 year warranty, but it costs 10 bucks because they have to ship it back to you. its even more insulting that its called the rabbit when it takes me more than 5 minutes or longer to get a stupid bottle open. i really couldnt be more disappointed and disgusted. such a pain in the A**. skip it and buy something else with your money.
