 "Never had better" 2009-09-24

I've gone through a lot of wine keys in my day, and this one tops the list. I do a lot of tasting parties, so I really appreciate ease, speed, and comfort of opeining. This key handles all three beautifully.

"Not as good as the original....." 2009-09-17
By William Rosich
....but a solid corkscrew. Love the deeply-hinged boot. Makes extracting longer corks a snap. The hinge action and overall construction is superior in every way to the ubiquitous Pulltap corkscrew.

My big problem with it is the bulk. It has a very wide handle. Not a problem if you keep it in a drawer in the kitchen, but too big to comfortably carry in a pocket; as I need to as I'm a bartender at a wine bar. If you want something with the same design but in a slimmer form, seek out the original Coutale. I found the original Coutale corkscrew for $15 at a certain winery in Paso Robles co-owned by a certain famous family from France's Rhone Valley. (If that ain't a hint, chances are you aren't much of a wine snob.) That's what I carry at work now.

I open dozens of bottles a night at work and I'm very particular about the harware I use. I've tried everything from cheap distributor give-aways to Pulltaps to Coutale/Screwpull to Chateau Laguiole (the carbon fiber Eric Beaumard edition is quite nice) and this Screwpull/Coutale design is by far the easiest to use.

"much better than the $5 options" 2009-08-19
By D. Duong (Los Angeles, CA)
for just a little bit more money than generic corkscrew, you can have a screwpull. i was tired of having my $5 corkscrews break apart on me so i opted to spend a little more and boy am i glad i did. it's very solid feeling and looks to be built to last and the 2-step key makes for easy work of any length cork. highly recommended

 "Good Corkscrew" 2009-08-29
By G. E. Meddaugh (Mtn. View, Calif)
This corkscrew was purchased to replace an identical unit that broke after a couple of years of fairly heavy service. The original worked well enuf that I was happy to replace it with what seems an identical unit.

As long as you have one finger that can be held rigidly, you can remove a cork from the bottle and removing the cork from the corkscrew is a matter of putting a modest squeeze on the body and reversing the direction of the turning of the handle. I have some pain in my hands and this is the easiest to use of those I've tried.

"Works Like it Should but I Have Issues" 2009-08-22
By T. Rochol
The Screwpull Pocket Model Corkscrew, Black works as it should, quickly removing a cork from a wine bottle; but unless there's another way to use it, it inevitably, puts a hole all the way through the cork. If like me, you usually don't finish a bottle at a single sitting, and store the bottle horizontally to save room, you may have wine leaking out of the cork hole, into the refrigerator. My former 'winged' corkscrew let me remove corks without making a hole all the way through. Horizontal wine bottle storing is the correct method and in my case, required, due to limited room.

"Best corkscrew I've ever owned - this is my second in 20 years!" 2009-08-13
By dakini_grl
Reliable, easy to use, and sturdy. And luckily, goof-proof for a klutz like me! So easy to open corked bottles with this contraption -- and unlike the Rabbit at five times the price, few moving parts that might break or malfunction.

I've owned at one for decades and it finally gave up the ghost. I ordered two this time!

"screwpull wine opener - get one" 2009-07-02
By M. Sacarakis (Bethlehem, PA)
This is my second Screwpull wine opener. My first one would have lasted forever, but my husband was over zealous in his efforts to open a bottle of wine one evening with the first one. I went to my kitchen drawer to use my backup opener and was immediately reminded why I loved my original Screwpull. This product extracts the cork with so little effort and takes up far less room in my kitchen drawer than others do. This is a great product that you will enjoy using again and again.

"Nice while it lasted, which wasn't very long" 2009-06-30
By David D. Dayton (Silver Spring, MD USA)
I liked this corkscrew, though the ritual of using it is prolonged: take it apart and put it together to use, then take it apart and put it together to store.

One of the plastic arms that hold the screw in place broke after about six months of use. I might have been able to get more mileage out of the thing by applying some superglue, but my wife quickly bought an old-fashioned metal corkscrew that folds up like a pocketknife -- the kind we've seen many waiters use.

Feels solid, and it's easier to use. We'll stick with that.

"buy the newer Metrokane VERTICAL Rabbit INSTEAD" 2009-09-13
By David Jeske (San Francisco, CA United States)
This corkscrew was a nice first design. However, it's really huge, and it isn't flawless. The same company has developed a new version called the Metrokane VERTICAL Rabbit. That opener is nearly flawless. It's much smaller, and it is even easier to use. You can read my review on the vertical rabbit. It's truly great. Plus, the vertical rabbit comes in a few different color choices. Don't bother with the normal rabbit anymore IMO.

"works great until it doesn't" 2009-07-04
By John Courtade (Austin, Texas United States)
This is a wonderful product initially. It's easy to use and the cork just slides out effortlessly. However, the screw that it uses soon wears out. This can happen in as little as 3 to 6 months or so depending on how much wine you drink. I assume that the teflon coating wears off or the tip dulls. In any event, it then becomes increasingly difficult to use until it starts pushing the cork in the bottle. They throw in one extra screw, but additional ones are outrageously priced--$10 on Amazon. Nice margin for the manufacturer. There were at one time Chinese knock-offs in the marketplace that had the same characteristics, but at least they were cheap, $10 or 15 if I remember correctly. This product costs a lot of money for its short lifespan.

"Makes wine opening SO EASY!" 2009-06-09
By K. Huang
Wow! I've hated wine bottle openers for as long as I can remember - first, it seems like they always need lots of arm strength for the tugging of the cork, and second, the cork sometimes shreds and bits of cork fall into the wine - gross. The Rabbit makes the whole experience almost..enjoyable! Clamp, twist, pop, there goes the cork! Love it! Don't need excessive arm muscle either ;)

 "Worst P of S ever" 2009-06-06
By M. Balzano
I want to give this piece of crap 0 stars, but really it deserves a negative number. I bought this after many many failed wine openers, and i thought this was the one. I opened 3-5 bottles successfully - and then the nightmare began. i cant get a bottle open now without 20-40+ tries. sometimes it is taking so long i have to leave it alone for a bit and then come back and try again. it has nothing to do with the coated corkscrew. it is just a piece of crap. i have been meaning to send it back under its 10 year warranty, but it costs 10 bucks because they have to ship it back to you. its even more insulting that its called the rabbit when it takes me more than 5 minutes or longer to get a stupid bottle open. i really couldnt be more disappointed and disgusted. such a pain in the A**. skip it and buy something else with your money.

 "It's the best, Jerry!" 2009-08-16
By Sweet Jayne (Newburyport MA)
I ordered one of those "rabbit type" openers and sent it back ... opening a bottle of wine shouldn't be that difficult! I have three of these, several years old, and they all work great. I was initially concerned because they are plastic, but haven't had any breakage at all. I love the way these work .. and they are a conversation piece! Every cork slides out effortlessly. It's a keeper!

"Best corkscrew on the planet" 2009-07-26
By Carol Mcginnis Kay (Columbia, SC)
I agree with everyone who said this is the best crokscrew ever--easy to use, failsafe, and wondefully inexpensive. I just want to add one more advantage: the 'lever' or 'rabbit ear' corkscrews can cause a bottle to slip out of your control (I always wish I had a third hand to hold the bottle). With the Screwpull, one hand holds the bottle and the other twists the corkscrew. Easy and quick. And in the twenty years I've used this device, I've never experienced any of the problems mentioned by a couple of folks.

I've tried lots of corkscrews, from basic to fancy, and nothing beats this little guy. It's so simple and easy to use that after the first time trying it I bought two more for my mother and sister. I don't know how well it will hold up as it's not real heavy-duty but as of right now I can't imagine ever getting another kind of corkscrew!

 "works very well" 2009-09-13
By Diane F (Lake Mary, FL United States)
We've purchased several foil cutters from different vendors over the years, most of which didn't work well and have fallen apart after just a few uses. This one, however, does the job very well and seems as though it will hold up longer than others we've had.

 "Works well. Eventually breaks." 2009-05-31
By Robert (California)
I've had this item for probably 15 years. It does a nice job of neatly cutting off the foil tops on all non-champagne wine bottles. Red, white, rose (does anyone actually drink rose?)

Eventually, the plastic holding the little metal cutters started to crack from stress. I repaired the plastic after it cracked all the way through, and this lasted another 6-12 months. It's finally broken beyond repair. Seems like a design issue. Will be looking at the newer model.

 "works great" 2009-05-26
By Essie Shoemaker (Midwest, USA)
This is basic 4 wheel (cutting wheel) foil cutter. Works fine. Replacing another brand that had lost one of its wheels and was getting dull. I don't know how long this will last, but it seems as solidly made as one would expect. It is lighter than the other, and a bit smaller, but that is fine with us. And, being new, it works on one or two turns without repeated turning turning turning to cut the foil.

This product is not worth the money. The second time I used the opener one of the wheels fell off. I put it back on and it keeps coming off. To pay for the shipping to replace it, assuming the manufacturer would replace it, would cost more than its worth!

This little gizmo and accompanying rubber plugs ends the problem of left-over wine and how to store it. After the plug is inserted the Vacu Vin pumps the air from the bottle, creating an air-tight seal. It keeps wine fresher longer. Until the day when screw caps are universal, this pump is an indispensable part of any wine lover's kitchen.

 "Good Buy" 2009-06-01
By Andrew Woollock (Kyoto, Japan)
I know there is a lot of debate abound concerning this product, and a lot of negative comments too. Before purchasing it I read arguments on both sides of the fence and then decided to go ahead and give it a try anyway. For my usage it's a well-made, effective and reasonably-priced solution to my problem which is that I prefer to buy full-size (not half-size) bottles.

What you get from this product will vary depending on what you drink and how you drink it. I only drink red Bordeaux so my experience using this product relates only to that consumable. However, no matter what kind or what shade of wine you drink you need to realise the varied laws of science that are at play here insofar as with wine you are essentially dealing with an organic product that will rapidly deteriorate if exposed to oxidation, therefore, any wine which is opened should be drunk soon thereafter. All this product will do is give you a little bit of grace, it will not miraculously preserve your wine or reverse its degeneration.

My own personal using style is based upon enjoying the taste and flavour of quality wines and not on consuming quantities. I therefore tend to drink half a bottle one one day and half on the next. If possible I also combine the opening of a bottle with the making of pasta and so I can use some in my sauce too. I also tend to put the bottle in my refrigerator between drinkings. If you approach opening and consuming a bottle in that manner I think you will find no noticeable deterioration in the quality and enjoyment of your wine. Certainly I have not.
